Hear Him!

By Patricia Newman

While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!”
Matthew 17:5

For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.
2 Peter 1:16-18

Here, at the  mount of Transfiguration, God the Father declares and reveals Jesus Christ as His Beloved Son, the Anointed One, the Chosen One, the awaited Messiah. He is the One greater than all the spiritual heroes - greater than Moses, greater than Elijah, greater than Solomon, greater than Jonah. He is the unique, eternal Son of God, the second person of the Godhead.
The purpose of the revelation of Christ to you and to me is that we recognise Him as Lord and Saviour: that we hear, honour, love and obey Him. The injunction to hear him must be obeyed if any is to have eternal life. In Acts 3:22-23, the apostle Peter reminds the people of Moses' words concerning our Lord Jesus:

The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brethren. Him you shall hear in all things, whatsoever He says to you.
And it shall be that every soul who will not hear that Prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.
Acts 3:22-23

Friends, I implore you, hear Him. Hear the word of Jesus. Hearing is not merely a mental activity, it results in action. Hear the word of God, yield to Him and obey Him. Loving obedience is His due. He is WORTHY! All who belong to the true and living God receive the grace of the love of Jesus Christ. This results in obedience to God.

In the transfiguration account, the disciples, fully awake, saw the glory of Jesus - the brightness of divine glory. They heard the Father's divine approval of the Son. True disciples of Jesus both hear His voice and follow Him (John 10:27).

Listen to the One who alone is the only begotten Son of God. He is the Way, the Truth, the Life (John 14:6). He is the One who has the words of eternal life (John 6:68). O that we may have a vision of the glory of Christ, through the word and by His Spirit. May we follow the path of loving obedience to God, denying ourselves, taking up our cross daily to follow Him, for the path to glory is through the cross. You were created for His glory: hear Him, glorify Him!

For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?
Hebrews 2:2-4
